Browser HTML5 version may be unstable. Download below is recommended.
ROM Check Panic! is a fan sequel/remake of Farbs’ 2008 fangame, ROM CHECK FAIL.
The result of a high-speed collision between arcade classics (and Zelda)!
Go for a high score across 20 constantly changing levels. The goal is simple: defeat all the enemies… but who they are and how you fight them changes every few seconds.
This game makes heavy use of flashing colors, patterns and motion to emulate game corruption. An option is provided on first-boot to disable this. This can always be adjusted in the settings.

Whee! It’s very cool to see this, and to play with new characters and art and music. Nice work.
EDIT: Also, lol @ 37MB download. I’m sure that’s mostly just the Godot runtime, but wow times have changed since 2008! ROM CHECK FAIL was 2.5MB :)
Lovely to see your seal of approval, lol
Yeah, unfortunately Godot is quite large, but even without that the pck (the game's stuff) is 7.5MB. I think that can be put down to using streamed music rather than MIDIs, and my terrible spaghetti code.
Loved RCF as long as I can remember; instilled in me a deep love for General Midi Square Lead and glitch art. Great work with this. Makes me feel a deep calm and joy in my soul. Thank you for making it.
Such a nice comment, I truly appreciate it!
Awesome, loved it! I'll have to be a bit more patient when the glitch is incoming since I often end up putting myself in precarious situations, hehe.
The only thing I'd like to suggest for any potential future updates is to have the high score displayed on the title screen...
I'm glad you liked it! I'll be taking a break from this for a short while, I have many plans for the future and hopefully I can get around to doing them :)
Bug: When playing as Mario, jumping into the Breakout blocks kills him
Arkanoid blocks are enemies just like anything else. You can jump on top of them just fine
Fair, but it still feels like a glitch, since Mario famously breaks blocks by jumping into them from below
Doesn't the ship from Asteroids use tank controls? Why does it have normal controls here?
Also, the red balls need a nerf lol
It's from Sinistar, which does not use tank controls
This is a great little remastering of an awesome freeware game, and I would say it's pretty faithful to the original ROM check fail, as well offering a few accessibility options like toning down the glitchy effects, which is nice! Well worth a playthrough.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I hope my changes were understandable, lol
Extremely polished. Accurate to original games' controls. Extremely chaotic.
